Even if not meaning exactly that, a lot of the topics Anrew Morton addressed in a presentation at the ‘Japan Linux Symposion’ in July 2008 (Andrew Symposion) are pointing in that direction. What is lacking and what is coming next?

In regard to technology, Andrew points out some very important things for the next years:

• Filesystems
• Memory management
• OS virtualization (container)
• Resource control (per container resource control)
• Tracing

In general, his summary is a little bit frustrating - have a look at it yourself. More on that soon.

Yes - it is really a pain. Although I like OpenSolaris the procedure of updating it can be improved a lot. The package server itself seems to be not very reliable: each update run has to be restarted several times: and even more worse - it cannot be restarted. Imagine: after downloading about 1.3G for updating your process aborts and you need to download all that stuff again.

There is really a lot of need for improvement - at least, the process should be restartable at that point he got the error.

It was a little bit a pain: updating always timed out, even if ‘PKG_CLIENT_TIMEOUT’ was set to a much higher value than the default. The update server ‘pkg.opensolaris.org’ did not seem to be very reliable - hopefully it is not running opensolaris itself.

However finally I succeeded - and I am now on snv_91:
